The Muenzenberg

Visitors of Quedlinburg may have heart a lot of the castle hill with its castle. He rests above the town, but beneath the hill there is a second mountain. This hill is called Muenzenberg and belongs to the city of Quedlinburg. We say it is one of the nicest places in our town.

The Muenzenberg consits of a couple of small buildings, which have a beautiful overlook over the city of Quedlinburg and the region of Harz area. Every building has its own history and kind of construction. All of them have their roots in the earliest time of Quedlinburg’s history.

The reason for developing of th Muenzenberg was the founding of an old convent which was dedicated to the Saint Maria. The foundation was during the time of the first abbot Mathilde and existed until the war of farmers, respectively the Reformation. The Reformation was introduced in Quedlinburg in the year 1539 during the control of abbot Anna II. After that the convent was left unused, respectively used partly as quarry. So musicians, craftsmen and journeymen settled here around 1580. Even today the buildings there are so nice and sweet like the first from the settlers of this time. Because of this the owners today don’t want to leave although there are larger buildings in the city of Quedlinburg. For me as night watchman it is always a beautiful and thrilling thing to go with visitors to the Muenzenberg during the night. The enthusiasm of my visitors is shown in their eyes after the tour.
